Lisbon on a Hot Day

Catherine Jarvis writes:

We spent Monday at the beach with the kids while Eric went to his conference.

The Atlantic Ocean is freezing cold.

Only person who swam was Catie.

Everyone else had a dip but quickly retreated.

Even with sunblock 60, we all got a little burned (except Hebe).

Walked along the beach and explored the tidal pools too.

Fado, painting by José Malhoa (1910)

Tuesday went to the Fado museum.

A fado is sung by one person called a fadista and is normally accompanied by a Portuguese guitar and a classical guitar.

We went to see this famous painting.

Not a huge hit with the kids.

Yesterday explored St George's castle and took the famous trolley ride up the narrow streets of Lisbon.

The heat is almost unbearable.

Now I understand the need for siesta, so everyone can retreat from the sun between 1-4 p.m.

The temperature becomes bearable again around 5 p.m.

Hebe said it best yesterday when she cried out in the mid-day heat, "Sun go away".
