The Pomegranate Challenge - Air Pressure or Mechanical Force

Pouria: I have something else to show you David.
Choosing a good piece of fruit is a daunting task.

Pouria selects them by looking at the colour – the deep red, the better.

The handout suggests that the outside of a ripe pomegranate can vary from light pink to a deep ruby red. They say that the key is selecting a good fruit is “the heavier the better”.

David: Just one more seed into my mouth
Is the key to a good piece of fruit its weight?

As our contest was coming to a close, Pouria told David that there is one more thing you can do with pomegranate arils – use them like a little pea between your fingers and shoot them in different directions.

They went to the front room where Bonnie set up a long clear path for them to practise.

Pouria: Here is what you do with your fingers.
Again, Pouria knew just how to shoot those seeds so that they had distance as well as the ability to get close to the target.

He showed David perfect technique.

David’s fingers don’t have the same flexibility. But he tried his best to pick up the new skill.

David: My fingers are having a hard time getting into position.

Everyone went to bed tired: the judge, the organizers, the clean-up people, and the contestants.
